As the country gets ready for another Wimbledon match this summer, it seems like a good time to see what nine time Wimbledon champion, Martina Navratilova has been doing since retiring from the game of tennis. Next month when Wimbledon is being played here in the UK, Martina Navratilova will have her first commercial exhibition in the UK. You see, Ms. Navratilova now spends her time hitting paint covered tennis balls at canvases. She is calling this technique of art “tennising”.
The idea for tennising was first brought up to Navratilova in 2000 by Czech artist Juraj Kralik who requested a meeting with her during the 2000 US Open in New York. The idea came to Kralik after looking at the marks the tennis balls left on the clay court during a match. He then approached Navratilova about it. 2008 is the first year that tennising will be on the market.
The artwork does not come cheaply. Prices currently range from 1, 500 pounds to 126,000 pounds. Canvases have already sold at various venues outside of the UK in the first few months of 2008. Navratilova and Kralik acknowledge that the prices are high and have developed a line of T-Shirts that reflect the art at more affordable prices.
A preview of the works that have been inspired by Wimbledon and other world championship tennis matches are available on Ms. Navratilova’s website.
If you are looking to wear a different kind of tennis T-shirt, one that is artistic in its representation of the Grand Slam courts and tournaments, then be on the look out for Martina Navratilova’s T-Shirts that are based upon her Art Grand Slam collection. Tennising may just be the next fashion trend to hit UK tennis fans in the coming years.
