On Wednesday May 21, 2008 40,000 British fans were in Moscow for the Champions League football final. The much anticipated game between Manchester United and Chelsea has attracted a lot of attention. It is the first Champions League final in which two English teams have competed against each other. In Red Square a special area was set up in anticipation of the big game. Part of the area had vendors selling goods such as badges, T-Shirts and hats. Another part of the area was set up for the children. Artificial grass was brought in and put down so that the children could play football in their UEFA T-shirts. Many of the fans that gathered in Red Square to buy souvenirs and to share in the excitement were dressed in support of their favorite team. Manchester United fans were appropriately dressed in red T-Shirts and Chelsea fans wore blue T-Shirts to show their team spirit.
Moscow police took great strides to make sure that everything went well in the days surrounding the event. Fans of each club were clearly identifiable in their team colours and gear. Mostly, they hung out together in restaurants and on the streets of Moscow. They did not interact all that much and when they did interact prior to the game it was peaceful and befitting such an important football match.
In order to ensure peace prior to during and after the big match up, organizers of the game set up tent towns for each set of fans. They are meant to keep the fans for each time separated as much as possible. The fans will then access the stadium through special bridges that link their tent towns directly with the stadium.
Both Manchester United and Chelsea have been the English champions twice in the past four years so it is fitting that they meet in the UEFA championship game.
