This month a new magazine will launch in Britain. The magazine called
Surfgirl is a girls only surfing magazine. It reflects the change in
the sport here in the UK. Traditionally, surfing has been a man’s sport
due to the icy cold waters of the United Kingdom but if you look among
the waves today you will see many women surfing alongside the men. In
fact according to Louise Searle, editor of Surfgirl magazine, “In the
past two years there's been a big change. Now more girls are learning
to surf than boys, and the women's surfing industry is huge."
It is only since 2005 that Britain has had enough qualified women to enter a squad in surfings junior world games. Now, surfing is popular among girls across England, Wales and Scotland. Women are even beginning to win the coveted sponsorship of major brands.
The recent popularity of surfing among women has led to growth in the fashion industry as well. Women now need to not only look like a surfer but they also need to be able to function out on the waves. Accordingly, different brands have developed T-Shirts, shorts and wetsuits that are particularly designed for women.
The freezing cold temperatures of Britain’s waters may make a state of the art wetsuit a necessity but as the female surfers get ready for photo shoots and compete in competitions all over the world they will need T-Shirts and surfing shorts as well. Further, as the public becomes more interested in female surfers, the sponsorship opportunities will rise for these athletes. Promotional T-Shirts may become a regular sight on the beach when the surfers are competing.
UK girls are ready to enjoy the waves, compete and look good doing it. So, watch out world because the UK female surfers are out to win the next competition.
