British Red Cross Educating People About HIV with T-Shirts

Friday 07th of March 2008 06:02:34 PM

British Red Cross Educating People About HIV with T-ShirtsBritish Red Cross in the Cayman Islands is using t-shirts to raise awareness for HIV. Reuters Foundation reports that the Red Cross is taking part in this campaign because it is important for people to test for HIV so they know whether they are infected with the disease. The program manager, Carolina Ferreira states in the article that many people believe that they know who is more likely to have HIV by factors such as profession, social status, appearance, and economics. The problem is that you cannot determine if someone has HIV by looking at those factors, which is why the number of infected individuals continues to rise.

The shirts that the campaign is using to promote awareness have HIV+ in big, bold letters on the front of the shirt. The back the shirt reads, "…until proven negative. Get tested." Having shirts like these available will remind people of what they already know but are too scared to come to terms with in their daily contacts and relationships. If more people know facts about HIV, people are more likely to take precautions against entering risky situations.

The issue that the Cayman Islands face is that there is a lack of education about the disease. Even though the rate of the contracting the disease is not very high in the Cayman Islands, it can become a huge problem virtually overnight if people are not careful. Along with this campaign and safe sex practice education in high schools, the disease can remain at the current low numbers. If you would like to support the campaign or learn more about it, visit the website at http://www.redcross.org.uk/TLC.asp?id=75779.
