Recharge your iPod with your Shirt

Wednesday 13th of February 2008 03:03:54 AM

Recharge your iPod with your ShirtT-shirts come in all varieties and now you will be able to power your mobile or iPod easily with your very own t-shirt. The journal Nature reports that nanotechnology researchers are developing a t-shirt that will produce electricity to power small devices such as your iPod or mobile.

This means that if you are on the go and you suddenly realise your iPod is low on battery life or your mobile is about to shut off you can simply power it back up with the electricity from your shirt. The fibres in the shirt are being manufactured with xinc oxide nanowires. These nanowires respond to mechanical stress. This means that when you move around it produces energy in the fibres, which turn it into electricity. They are calling this process "the piezoelectric effect". The piezoelectric effect is when certain metals place pressure on others and cause an electric charge.

The only thing that the scientists have not been able to prevent is the effects of moisture on the shirt. The fibres in the shirt are not waterproof which means that if you wear it in the rain you will lose all electricity conserved in your shirt.
