Derry Journal reports that after 1000 people lost their jobs at Seagate during the summer this news of the downsizing at Derry Factory is a frightening realization that times are getting difficult for the people of the North West region. Since the major job loss in the summer, job security has been on people’s minds. This is for a good reason because there has been speculation that the economy is on the decline in the area because the manufacturing industry is on its way out. Derry factory which manufacturers many different types of shirts such as t-shirts. The factory has been working with 115 employees. After the downsizing, the factory will only have 30 left. This may be the beginning of the end for the Derry factory. Unite member, Gareth Scott refers to the extreme job loss as a “devastating blow”.
Foyle Sinn Fein MLA Martina Anderson finds that this loss of jobs will continue if nothing is done about it. They have notified the Irish and British Government to help in the fight against this downward spiral and claim North West as a region of economic need. They have also started a ‘Stand Up For Derry Campaign’ to help bring attention to the area and receive some investment into the region. Only time will tell if this will stop the devastation of the manufacturing industry of the North West.
