With all of the news about cotton t-shirts being made by child labour many companies like Continental Clothing Company are taking a stand against this form of child slavery. These children are working in deplorable conditions and are either paid very little or nothing at all for their work. One of the cotton industries that have been recognized as part of this is Uzbeki cotton. In a September 2007 press release, the Environment Justice Foundation has made a motion to have all clothing marked with the country that the cotton was produced. This way, consumers and retailers will know if their merchandise has come from one of the areas that use child labour. In September 2007, Continental Clothing took the advice of the Environmental Justice Foundation and has started placing this information on their shirts. This is the first company to follow the guidelines set forth by the EJF. They are promoting awareness and helping others make a responsible decision on the clothes that they purchase.
There is no reason that children should be working in dangerous and unhealthy environments. Many have started a boycott again Uzbek Cotton in efforts to have them change their manufacturing of their cotton t-shirts. It will take some time before everyone will be on board but the more people make conscience decisions on products they sell the faster these child labour areas will end. To learn more about these child slavery conditions or purchase some ethically made cotton t-shirts visit the Continental Clothing Company website.
