The Geelong Advertiser reports that an Australian retailer has been made to remove all ADHD t-shirts
from their shelves due to the insensitivity of them to the disorder. The design of this shirt consists of the abbreviation of Attention Deficient Disorder (ADHD) with a reference to the Australian rock back, AC/DC. Since 9 to 15 percent of the population in Australia has been diagnosed with the inattention disorder many feel that the shirt is disrespectful and gives off a negative connotation of the illness. The Geelong Company, Cotton On had no intention on disrespecting any of its consumers or general public. Until the shirts were pulled off the shelf more than 600 of these t-shirts were sold. It wasn’t until some parents felt offended by seeing the shirt at a popular toddler and children’s clothing shop, Victorian Cotton On Kids that it become a problem. Psychologists then came on board to voice their concerns with the t-shirts.
Since the uproar over the ADHD t-shirts, there will be a new procedure in selling new t-shirts that display a message like these. New t-shirts will be screened for possible disrespect or offensive material. The mental health community as well as parents of children suffering with ADHD can some find some relief in the fact that these shirts will no long make their children’s condition a joke.
