US Retailers Donating to Charity This Holiday Season

Thursday 29th of November 2007 01:33:00 AM

US Retailers Donating to Charity This Holiday SeasonBDO Seidman, LLP has been collecting information about the charitable contributions of US retailers this holiday season. BDO Seidman, LLP is a service which provides tax support, financial advisory, assurance and consulting services to public and private companies across the US. After reviewing the current charity plans of retailers this holiday season, the company has concluded that charitable contributions from retailers are on the rise this season.

It was found that 26% of US retailers are holding some kind of charitable promotion during the holiday season. The retailers who are making charity contributions half of them are either donating a certain amount or a percentage of their total sales. One third of these retailers will be donating the profits they receive from specific items. Examples of an item a retailer may donate proceeds from are red t-shirtsfrom the Red Campaign.

The study has also found that many retailers are trying to give more exposure to natural or “green” clothing this season. This type of clothing is becoming popular for those who are eco-conscious. Green apparel is made from all natural materials and has been made by quality manufacturers (no clothing made in sweatshops). Green clothing tends to be more expensive but better for the environment so it’s better for you.

BDO Seidman, LLP feels that the reason why retailers have increased their willingness to contribute to charities is because it looks good for the company. When companies give to charities, consumers view them positively and are more likely to shop with them. The increase in retail donations seems to be causing a type of competition. Retailers also may be donating to charities and making this publicly known because it makes customers more likely to buy more from them. When costumers feel they are helping those in need by buying something they are more likely to buy.
