World Vision, a Christian humanitarian group has made agreements with Major League Baseball (MLB) to save losing team T-Shirts from being thrown in incinerators. Mr. Fields and his colleagues have started to put T-Shirts that would normally be thrown away after a team has lost and will send them to Ghanaians who are in desperate need of new clothing due to recent flooding. Licensed manufacturing companies who make t-shirts, hats and other apparel for major sports teams will manufacture before games will even be played so that merchandise will be available as soon as the winners have been announced. The problem lies is that since the manufacturers are producing apparel for both teams, one of the teams' merchandise will have to be disposed of. Not anymore, now the merchandise can be shipped to needy individuals in Africa who don't know what the MLB or NFL is or what their shirts really mean. All that these impoverished Ghanaians really care about is that they have clean, new clothes that have no holes in them.
World Vision not only approached MLB and NFL but they have also started agreements with major sporting-good stores. These stores also will be carrying merchandise for both teams but will only be able to sell the winner's merchandise. These sporting-goods stores like Sports Authority have been more than receptive to World Vision because donating the already made t-shirts to charity will mean that they are not at a total loss due to paying for unsellable merchandise, these stores can receive a tax credit for the shirts they donate.
This set up seems like a win-win situation for everyone. T-Shirts will be saved from incinerators and filling up landfills, the NFL and MLB will be able to donate to charity, sporting good stores can make back some of their loss from losing team merchandise and most importantly, individuals in Ghanaians will be able to have nice, new T-Shirts to wear.
