Social networking giant MySpace has announced that it will team up with Zazzle, a merchandising company that allows artists and Internet retailers to upload their own designs to be printed on T-Shirts, hats, mugs, and other items and sold to others who want to buy them. Through this partnership, fans of the many musicians posted on MySpace will be allowed to buy band merchandise and other items if the musicians make them available."[The musicians will have] instant-manufacturing capability, where we can have the design on a t-shirt or poster within minutes, is really our secret sauce. The bands can also create their own pricing model, and since we don’t outsource the manufacturing, there are no middle men," said Jim Heckman, chief strategy officer for Zazzle.
Musicians will be able to upload their own designs and decide how much to charge for items such as T-Shirts. While MySpace and Zazzle have yet to comment on any revenue-sharing, this new program can help musicians establish themselves even faster by getting more people to wear their merchandise. Musicians will be able to add widget to their profile page, band website, and other sites where they are active.
Google, who owns MySpace, was interested in working with Zazzle after learning that all materials printed could be done within a 24-hour period and shipped to the customers.
This new feature will help not only musicians trying to earn more fans, but also MySpace and Zazzle who will benefit from added exposure.
