For French clothing manufacturer, Montagut, becoming an influence in Chinese fashion over the past twenty years started when they began selling high-end Polo Shirts in 1982. "Montagut entered the Chinese mainland market at a happy moment in China's history, when the people were coming out of isolation and shortages and beginning to enjoy the fruits of reform and opening up policy," said Pierre Gros, chairman and president of Montagut.During the 1980's, many Chinese businessmen were earning enough money to afford expensive clothing and enjoyed the status that wearing Montagut Polo Shirts bought them. As the Chinese economy continued to grow, so did the manufacturer's presence. Today, they have over 3,000 boutiques in China including larger cities like Hon Kong. And their franchise just keeps growing. Their latest store recently opened in Macao, which is a fashion and entertainment hub. "We shall use the flagship store to display the most trendy and fashionable lines in our ranges after our success in other parts of China," said Gros.
When speaking of the Chinese market, Gros said, "With our early presence in Hong Kong and Chinese mainland, we gradually came to love and understand the Chinese people and their expectations, and spent more efforts than any other European brand year after year to satisfy them."
Adding even more franchises in the future is the company's main goal in the Chinese marketplace.
