Clothing Retailer Urban Outfitters Reuses and Recycles

Saturday 20th of October 2007 02:18:18 AM

Clothing Retailer Urban Outfitters Reuses and RecyclesEven established clothing companies are getting into the 'going green' spirit by making new clothing from recycled clothes that are being sent to charity stores or thrown in the trash. Urban Outfitters, a successful clothing retailer in the US has created a new line called Urban Renewal. New clothing including Sweatshirts, pants, skirts, and jackets are made from discarded clothing from 70's,80's, 90,'s, and today.

"We can get recycled materials and re-assemble them and make each one special. It can be re-made into something someone can wear and continue on this tradition, and after that someone can re-make that again," said Jason Turner, one of the people working on developing the new line. One piece of clothing can be used to create one or more outfits. Not only does this help the environment, but also cuts down on textile costs.

In order to find enough clothing to support the line, Urban Outfitters has sent several designers to different parts of the world to find discarded T-Shirts, jackets, pants, and other items that can be made into a new piece of clothing.

So far, the company has used over 100,000 pounds of recycled clothing and is selling them in half of their stores in the US. The clothing can also be found on the company's website as well.
