Mobile Phones Reading T-shirts

Thursday 27th of September 2007 11:22:25 PM

Mobile Phones Reading T-shirtsIn Japan, people have been using barcodes to access information using their mobile phones for a few years now. Placed on billboards, business cards, and other advertising media, consumers take a picture of barcodes and the software program inside the mobile phone directs them to the corresponding website. Now, a company called Augme.com had designed a line of T-Shirts with barcodes that can be scanned easily using a mobile phone device.

For small and large businesses, this type of advertising is inexpensive and could become very popular. Those wearing the T-Shirts can promote their favourite companies or products, or advertise their own businesses. The barcode on the shirt is called a 'tag' and can be scanned by any mobile phone device that has the technology to read and download the information.

Even though mobile phones with this capability are manufactured in Europe and North America, many consumers have phones without scanning capabilities. But they can purchase the software needed if they have a phone that is able to take pictures. T-Shirts are available for purchase directly from Augme.com. It is not known if other companies will be introducing similar technology on T-Shirts in the future or if this trend will help increase individual website awareness.
