Almost eight months after Burberry closed one of its polo shirt manufacturing factories in Treorchy, UK, some of the factory’s three-hundred workers are still looking for employment. But help may be on its way as a property development company, Garrison Barclay, who bought the factory, has decided to divide the space (106,000 sq ft/ 9,850 sq m) into smaller units in order to bring more businesses and job opportunities to the area."The local workforce in Treorchy I think offers a great opportunity for any business looking to locate here. The road infrastructure is good. The employment base is good. The accessibility to this building is good. The only disadvantage that this building has in its current form is that it is too big. I think that the opportunities would be fewer for the building as it stands without an investor coming in, like ourselves, and spending the money here and making it available for wider range of businesses,” said Tristan Hobbs, managing director for Garrison Barclay.
In March, Burberry closed the door to the factory, which manufactured mostly Polo Shirts, after relocating its manufacturing division to China. Many employees were left without jobs, which has put a strain on the local economy. But with the prospect of new jobs, former Burberry employees are looking toward the future. "The people who worked here are a good workforce, and everybody knows that. I don't know how many have got jobs at the moment but I'm sure that if there were jobs going here, they would jump at them,” said one former Burberry employee, Wayne Phillips.
