T-shirts Made in the USA

Wednesday 12th of September 2007 12:24:10 AM

T-shirts Made in the USAIn an effort to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US, particularly in the textile industry, small companies are being formed to show that this is still possible without losing profits to the competition. Larger companies such as American Apparel, located in California, USA and smaller companies like the newly founded American Joe Apparel, located in Texas, USA, have similar goals when it comes to providing quality clothing such as T-Shirts made in the US.

“We're not saying people should stop buying things that are made outside the U.S., but in our own small way, we're trying to raise awareness that you can still make quality product in the U.S. that's affordable," said Nan Moon, who runs American Joe Apparel with her daughter. Other counties including the UK have has their own struggles with textile companies moving overseas and closing down plants, which force people to find other employment. The most recent example was the Burberry plant closing in March.

But getting more companies to return to the US to produce products is easier said than done. Citing labour costs, training expenses, and medical costs, many clothing manufacturers have moved their factories and plants overseas to countries like the Philippines, and China.

The recent backlash in products made in China may change some companies minds, however, if those living in the US do not wish to purchase them anymore. For now, smaller companies are trying to do their part to ensure that quality products are still being manufactured in the US. “So many people have lost their jobs because so much manufacturing has moved overseas that we wanted to show that there is a market for American-made goods,” said Moon.
