Proposed Banning of Sweatshirts and Other Clothing in Public Schools

Friday 07th of September 2007 02:09:30 AM

Proposed Banning of Sweatshirts and Other Clothing in Public SchoolsWhile many schools in the US and Canada have started requiring that students wear uniforms during school hours, other schools have begun to ban certain types of clothing, colours, and hats from being worn while on school property. But after school officials of Citadel High School, located in Canada, considered a ban Sweatshirts, many students, parents, and others complained and demanded to know why.

Because of rising incidents of violence in many schools, cameras have been placed around and inside Citadel High School and officials were afraid that students would cover their faces by using the hood. But after talking with students and parents, officials from the school amended their decision to allow students to wear the Sweatshirts as long as they did not wear the hoods inside the building.

"I'm glad that it's changed, but when I heard about it I was like, 'Wow, that's kind of unreasonable and crazy.’ Their reasons were like we're going to be doing bad stuff with our hoods up. We probably wouldn't,” said 15-year-old David Flemming, a student at the school.

While Citadel High School is the only school in Canada to propose a ban of sweatshirts, other schools have had to ban certain types of clothing in order to protect students, teachers, and school property. Schools in the US and Canada have banned cell phones, iPods, and other electrical equipment from being used during school hours.
