For French rugby players, winning the game is just as important as scoring the highest number of tackles. Started as a way to motivate players, French defensive coach David Ellis, gives T-Shirts to those who have the best tackle, the most tackles, the hardest tackle, the lowest tackle, and other categories.“Every match he gives a T-shirt to those who distinguished themselves in the tackles. Ellis has had T-Shirts printed honouring the best tackler in each category,” said French rugby player, Imanol Harinordoquy.
But Ellis doesn’t only hand out T-Shirts, he also honours the players by showing their field triumphs in a short film that highlights great moments in the game. Ellis, an Englishmen, was hired to work for the French team after working for the Rugby League.
Since Ellis has started this tradition, many of the players have starting collecting T-Shirts to add to their personal collections and to compare how many they have. “This little game pleases us," Harinordoquy said.
“Such a performance is stimulating. You want to do just as well,” said openside flanker Remy Martin. Each month, players are awarded for their hard work with a t-shirt that they can add to their collection. Another French rugby player, Flyhalf David Skrela has a shirt for best tackler, and another for 100% of tackles.
