‘Cradle to Cradle’ Program Educating Clothing Manufacturers

Started in 1986, the ‘Cradle to Cradle’ program, which was created by Michael Braungart, a chemist, is regaining popularity as new technology and clothing manufacturing methods have been developed. The programs aim is to certify companies that are practicing safe production methods in every aspect of the manufacturing process.

This includes the growth of materials, how they are harvested, cleaned, and turn into fabric that is used to create T-Shirts and other clothing.

Braungart, who helped create the first compostable T-Shirts, will be speaking at this year’s RITE Group Conference to be held next month in London, England.

“We have gained valuable insight from implementing our certification system across multiple industries, but we also want to hear what others think about the program. We look forward to receiving input on our draft criteria from product developers and the general public, and releasing a more robust set of criteria as a result,” said Ken Alston, CEO.

Companies who meet the current standards that are in place and those who go above and beyond these standards will receive certification.

But the ‘Cradle to Cradle’ program isn’t just for companies who are already conscious about their production and manufacturing methods. By learning more about current standards as well as ways to adopt them into their manufacturing processes, clothing companies can make a difference in the environmental issues that include air and water pollution, the use of biodegradeable materials, and energy conservation.
