Designing Happy Clothing

Monday 27th of August 2007 01:59:19 AM

Designing Happy ClothingFor twenty-two year old clothing designer and artist, John Fitzpatrick, adding happy faces to clothing, murals, and other artwork is normal. "The faces open you up to experience. They're travel guides through the flow of what I do,” said Fitzpatrick. When he isn’t designing clothing, he can be found participating in the painting of public murals or serving as a DJ in local Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA night clubs.

Fitzpatrick, who owns a custom clothing line, Johndesigns, will paint on any piece of clothing including T-Shirts, suit jackets, hats, and much more. “In a lot of ways, I'm experimenting with traditional fashion-industry techniques, as well as my own goofy stuff," said Fitzpatrick.

One creation is called the ‘Scoodie’, which is a traditional Sweatshirts with an added hood and scarf that is made from many different materials including silk or wool. Other creations include intricate embroidery and applying different materials to hats usually worn by truck drivers.

Navid Safabakhsh, executive director of Freshout Media, a PR firm who uses Fitzpatrick’s clothing designs to promote various community activities in Philadelphia is very pleased with his designs. "John's pleasant, extremely multitalented and keeps expanding his skill set. I love his illustrative work; that use of clean, thick, and curvaceous lines creates an awesome flow to his pieces,” said Safabakhsh.

Helping other young artists and clothing designers realise their dreams is what Fitzpatrick sees himself doing in the future. "That's the true notion of what couture really is, right? Something where you're part of the vision."
