UK Tennis legend Fred Perry, who won the Wimbleton crown between the years 1934-36 as well as the Men’s Singles title at the World Table Tennis Championships 1929, is once again becoming a household name with the release of a new sportswear line to celebrate an upcoming table tennis championship that has been named after him. “The Fred Perry Urban Cup will raise the profile of table tennis within inner city areas. It will access thousands of young people across the country, raising the level of participation in the sport,” said Richard Pettit.“Each city now has a team of boys and girls aged between twelve and sixteen years which will compete against teams from seven other major United Kingdom cities at the Urban Cup finals to be held in London on 8th September 2007. The winning city will be crowned Fred Perry Table Tennis Urban Cup Champions 2007,” said Pettit. Table tennis is the perfect game to play in the city because it can be played indoors without a lot of equipment.
Fred Perry Polo Shirts were released in 1952 and instantly become popular. Reinventing the brand by choosing talented table tennis players is a great way to promote the sport and the clothing at the same time. “Seen as one of the rising stars of British table tennis, Darius Knight has been selected as the face of the Urban Cup. As an inspirational figure to many, Knight’s rise to prominences has striking similarities to that of Perry making him the ideal figurehead to this exciting new initiative; let’s just hope he can go on to replicate Fred Perry’s World success!” said Pettit.
