During the 2004 Summer Olympic games in Athens, Greece, members of the International Olympics Committee with help from the United Nations created the Giving is Winning campaign and collected over 30,000 pieces of clothing including T-Shirts, jackets, shorts, and Polo Shirts and sports equipment from athletes and others who participated or attended the games. Most of the items were sent to refugee camps in Tanzania, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Kosovo and Azerbaijan.Since there are more than 20 million refugees around the world, those involved in the Giving is Winning campaign have started collecting clothing and other items now even though the next Olympic games is a year away. So far, the US Olympic Committee has collected 5,000 pieces of clothing for those living in Chad, while the UK Olympic Committee has sent clothing they collected to Rwanda.
"One of the guiding principles of the worldwide Olympic movement is the spirit of giving, and we are proud to have the opportunity to contribute to this worthwhile Giving is Winning campaign,” said US Olympic Committee chairman, Peter Ueberroth.
At next summer’s games, which will be held in Beijing, China, ten large containers about six meters wide will be available for those who want to donate T-Shirts and other items for those who have been displaced from their homes.
