Perfecting Organic T-shirt Production Methods

Wednesday 25th of July 2007 08:45:12 PM

Perfecting Organic T-shirt Production MethodsWhile there are many companies that manufacture organic T-Shirts as a way to reduce the amount of pesticides used on crops, most rely on outsourcing for at least one step in the process. But transporting materials and finished products to other countries impacts the environment. The Organic Cotton Company, based in Canada is the only company that produces T-Shirts entirely in North America.

Since cotton cannot be grown in Canada, the company relies on farmers in the Southern US to produce the cotton needed for its T-Shirts. After the cotton is harvested, it is transported to three different plants, two in the US and on in Montreal, Canada. After the fabric is woven, it is sent to Toronto, Canada, where the shirts are sewn and then packaged in recycled boxes to be sent to stores and shops.

"It's not unheard of. But the typical T-shirt has cotton yarn and often fabric that is manufactured in the United States and then the fabric is sent to Central America and the cutting and sewing is done there. The biggest suppliers of T-shirts to the United States are Central American countries, particularly Honduras," said author of 'Travels of a T-shirt in the Global Economy', Pietra Rivoli.

While T-Shirts produced by The Organic Cotton Company are among the most expensive to purchase, owner Jon Cloud is thrilled that people want to buy his shirts. "It took a good year to make the T-shirt a reality. I don't know if they are the best T-shirts. I haven't seen every T-shirt in the world but I know that it is manufactured using the highest-quality cotton in the world. I think I am most proud of my customers, though. It sends shivers over me to know people will use their money to bring a substantial amount of change to the environment," said Cloud.
