Kevin Bacon's SixDegrees.org, which was started by the actor and the Network for Good, helps charities help each other through fundraising and other community actions. The website recently announced a contest that will donate US$10,000 to the charity that raises the most money using the Internet as a fundraising tool. The actor, who has asked other celebrities including Rosie O'Donnell and Nicole Kidman to participate by adding their charities to the list, has prompted many non-celebrities to sign up and participate from around the world."We started with a group of my celebrity friends in January, but the real celebrities with a cause have turned out to be people who aren't from Hollywood. In our first six months, for every celebrity involved, we've had 100 non-celebrities join, and this community has raised nearly US$700,000 for thousands of charities with their badges. It goes to show that when we connect with others, our degrees of separation become smaller, and the world becomes a whole lot better," said Bacon.
In addition to earning money for their charity, those who participate in the challenge and who are able to encourage six people to donate through their charity badges or widgets that can be uploaded to any website or blog, will receive SixDegree.org T-Shirts, which are provided by Hanesbrands.Inc.
"Hanes is thrilled to be working with Kevin again and commends him for using his celebrity status toward the good of others. We are proud to connect Hanes with Six Degrees, and by doing so, join in the effort of connecting all people, including our consumers, to support causes close to their hearts," said Sidney Falken, vice president, Hanes brand.
Bacon worked with Hanesbrand, Inc. in 2006 by appearing in an ad campaign sponsored by the company.
