Becoming a recognised clothing designer takes a lot of hard work, media attention, and acceptance by the public. While many create websites in order to attract attention, some rely on street fairs so their work can be seen first-hand by those in the community. At this year's Feria Urbana, held in San Francisco, California, USA, there were many t-shirt designers, clothing, designers, and jewelry makers showing off their latest designs.Dina Paulos and her sister Kate, T-Shirts designers behind Stellarocco, showed off their Japanese inspired shirts. “I convert her hand drawn sketches into screen printing. We do a lot of tone prints with shades of light and dark. People enjoy wearing the shirts to class. They can even be worn to work with a pair of slacks and boots. One thing to remember is that success doesn’t usually happen overnight. It often takes years of work but it will be worth it," said Paulos.
Another t-shirt and clothing designer Ashley Taylor, displayed her line, aTaylor design, of t-shirts and baby clothes. “I like focusing on design and colour through my unique designs," said Taylor of her T-Shirts, which include patterns of colour behind the images that are printed on the shirts. Images include fish, bamboo, and other objects that represent nature.
Public fairs like these give new artists a chance to meet a variety of different people and learn more about the clothing business from each other. While many of the artists sell their work online, being able to talk with customers and those in the clothing industry is sometimes more rewarding than selling large quantities of shirts over the Internet.
