Offering plus-sized clothing to a growing number of the population that is overweight but still wants to be fashionable is the goal of one UK shop, Maelstrom Clothing Company. But deciding on when to offer larger sizes and be able to charge fairly for them was a concern for shop owner, Michael Elliott. “We felt this was unjust, but didn’t want to get into a big and tall range if we had to charge customers an awful lot more money. Luckily, we can carry on our value-led fashion for any size and replicate the standard. People should be able to be fashionable if they are large," said Elliott. After looking at online web sites that offer plus sized men's clothing and talking with suppliers, Elliott made the decision to offer a line of men's T-Shirts, shirts, trousers, and other items in any size up to 6XL, chest size of 62 inches, and waistlines of 60 inches. "We made some enquiries and found nobody in Cumbria caters for this type of person. When we researched it, we were told these guys want to be fashionable," said Elliot.
So far, the shop has been successful in its sales of plus-sized men's clothing. Online sales are also strong. “We have sold something from the new range every single day, but most of our customers in the Whitehaven store are from West Cumbria, so we decided we needed to cater for people in Furness and South Lakes," said Elliot. Future plans include adding a plus-sized women's line and expanding both lines to other locations.
