Over the past few years, the demand for Egyptian cotton by the US and EU have declined. This type of cotton is turned into yarn that is used in the production of clothing and other items.Traditionally, yarns containing a high cotton count have been used make dress shirts, pants, linens, pillows, and other household items. The demand for these items has also declined due to the availability of less expensive fabrics and disposal items household items that cost a fraction of the price.
Yarns, with an average or low cotton count, are used to make T-Shirts, towels, and other items. These yarns have not decreased as much because the demand for thin, soft shirts, and less expensive household items.
Since 1994, when the Egyptian spinning industry become liberalised, public yarn factories were opened in order to provide jobs and compete with privately Egyptian cotton businesses. But because of lowered demand, there are not enough jobs available for those who work in public factories. Public spinning factories also have to compete with factories in India and China.
Even though some of these public factories have been taken over by the private sector, little has been spent on increasing the demand for Egyptian cotton and yarn.
Environmental factors are also affecting this industry. As more companies begin promoting organic cotton T-Shirts and other clothing, US and EU clothing manufacturers are using different types of cotton along with organic dying techniques in order to remain competitive and provide products that are friendlier to the environment.
