New Olympic Logo Draws Criticism from UK Citizens

Tuesday 05th of June 2007 04:13:48 AM

New Olympic Logo Draws Criticism from UK CitizensLondon will be hosting the 2012 Summer Olympic Games and in preparation for the event, a new logo was introduced that has sparked a lot of criticism from citizens and others. While many in the Olympic community and UK government think the new logo, which includes the year 2012 in colours that include green, pink, blue, orange, is a good design, others are concerned that it is not grand enough for the Olympic Games.

The new logo will be printed on everything from T-Shirts to hats, so it needs to be an outstanding symbol that represents what the games are all about. “This is the vision at the very heart of our brand. It will define the venues we build and the Games we hold and act as a reminder of our promise to use the Olympic spirit to inspire everyone and reach out to young people around the world. It is an invitation to take part and be involved," said Seb Coe, the organising chairman for the London 2012 Olympic committee.

“We want London 2012 not just to be about elite sporting success. When people see the new brand, we want them to be inspired to make a positive change in their life. The new logo is a deliberate change from its previous and traditional logos which often feature an image from the city. Its previous logo, unveiled in November 2003 as London was bidding to host the event, featured a ribbon in the Olympic colours in the shape of the River Thames winding through the words 'London 2012', said UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair.

But not everyone feels this way about the new logo. "I think it’s a weird choice. Why didn’t they use the national colours? I think it looks a bit immature and a bit homemade, like someone’s just knocked it up in about 10 minutes," said London resident, Claire Allen.
