Ralph Lauren, most known for his signature Polo Shirts with embroidered pony logo, will be honoured for his contributions to the fashion industry by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in June. "Ralph is without hesitation the most successful American designer today. He reflects such talent and integrity. He has become such a global fashion and luxury brand, and he elevates American fashion," said Steven Kolb, executive director of the designers council.Lauren, who also designs other clothing from career wear to dresses worn at various awards banquets, has become an icon for comfortable, but elegant casual dressing. "He doesn't get too complicated. I love when Diane Keaton wears his pantsuits. That's so her. When you look at Gwyneth in the pink gown, that's one of the most standout looks from the past 10 to 15 years," said Rachel Zoe, a celebrity stylist.
Designing clothing for over forty years, Lauren shows no signs of stopping. His classic looks continue to show up in fashion shows and movies. Keeping the collar up when wearing Polo Shirts is one example of this classic, timeless look. "I don't think he changes very much, which is a great thing. He's been consistent. Other designers have rolled with the times, but it's an amazing thing to stick with what you know and what you love and your aesthetic," said fashion model Christy Turlington.
Other designers that will be honoured at the event include Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta and Marc Jacobs. Oprah Winfrey is scheduled to present Lauren with the American Fashion Legend award and will be wearing a dress created by the designer.
