After showing off their new T-Shirts in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, clothing designers Pascal Alouidor and Derek Smith had US$800,000 in orders after only three days. Since then, the pair has designed jeans, hoodies, and collared shirts for their new fall line. The inspiration for designing the shirts began when the two friends, both clothing design majors at New York City Technical College, could not find t-shirt designs they liked in stores. "We had a lot of criticism of other (designers), so we figured we might as well try it ourselves," Alouidor said. Showcasing their shirts at the MAGIC trade show in Las Vegas, was a good move as it gave them the attention needed to attract a variety of buyers.
While both still have full-time jobs outside of designing and marketing their line Alador and Smith, with sales reaching US$500,000 this year, they may have to work full-time on their label. "We want to be able to build a brand. I don't want us to be hot now and gone tomorrow,” said Smith. Building a brand has included various celebrities wearing their T-Shirts to public events. Model and actor Tyrese and rap artists Trey Songz and Saigon have all worn Alador and Smith.
T-Shirts are designed to fit closer to the body and are available in a variety of colours. Even the placement of graphics is unique with some shirts having graphics on the shoulders instead of in the middle near the chest.
The Alador and Smith line is sold in over 50 boutiques. "They're one of our best-selling T-Shirts. If the graphic is nice, people will track to it. And they have pretty cool graphics,” says Jacob Parris, co-owner of Vinnie's Styles in Brooklyn.
