Cycling for Charity

Thursday 24th of May 2007 03:41:33 AM

Cycling for CharityThe idea to ride around the perimeter of the continental United States on a bicycle was always a dream of Geoff Thomas, who is from Australia. An avid cyclist back home, Thomas decided if he was going to travel around the US, he would raise money for various charities along the way. After creating a web site and inviting charities to post their links, Thomas began his journey. Handing out T-Shirts, hats, and other items with the web address printed on them, he has been adding charities to his growing list and encouraging everyone to check out his web site.

After being diagnosed with Lupus in 2003, Thomas was going to use his travels as a way to promote awareness of the disease and help raise money for research. Other charities came forward and he decided to include them as well. If the charity is legitimate, Thomas will add them to his web site.

For his journey, Thomas will be funding it himself without help from sponsors. "I’ve always wanted to come [to the US] and do it. I’m a member of the Adventure Cycling organisation out of Montana. I’ve never really gotten the chance so I went across Australia. I figured if I don’t do it now, I’ll never do it,” said Thomas.

Thomas' web site includes updates on his travels, pictures, and other information for those who are interested in what he is doing. Thomas, who has a degree in radio broadcasting from a school in Sydney, Australia, is also a photographer. So far, he has traveled 1,859 miles and has handed out a lot of T-Shirts.
