In any social environment, there is bound to be a little politics. For Danni Tomkinson, who left a career in fashion in London in order to live quietly in the suburbs with her family, seeing the politics of the playground gave her the opportunity to lanch a new online t-shirt design company called ‘Queens of Suburbia’.After witnessing fights and the formation of cliques and other policical alliances, Tomkinson decided to comment on it by designing printed T-Shirts that were humorous, but also truthful. "The looks that passed between women, the messages that were being communicated without the recipients even being aware of it - That's where my motivation came from. I thought it would be interesting to give that non-verbal communication a voice,” said Tomkinson.
Creating humorous T-Shirts with sayings like ‘Clique of One’ and ‘Manicure Depressive’, Tomkinson is able to poke fun at the seriousness of wanting the best for one’s children. “At the end of the day, much of it is understandable, all any mother wants is the best for her child and like any environment sometimes it becomes a bit charged - but I see my tees as a humorous way of lightening the mood! If a woman wears a Queen of Suburbia t-shirt, it shows she gets the joke,” said Tomkinson.
While Tomkinson was used to the high charged political scene of the fashoin world, she did not expect it to be the same way on the playground. But as Tomkinson discovered, politics exists everywhere – which provides her with countless ideas for T-Shirts.
