Howies, which was bought by international clothing company Timberland last year, is planning to unveil new clothing products that are environmentally friendly using resrouces found in nature. Their buttons, for example, will now be made from Tagua nuts, which are found on palm trees in stead of traditional plastic. “We try to look at all the details to make sure they are as low impact as possible. In the past we have just used off-the-shelf buttons and a lot of them are made from plastic. But our designer sourced for us the tagua nut. It is completely natural and very, very tough. It is perfect,” said Howies co-founder, Claire Hieatt. In addition to using natural buttons on pants, shirts, and jackets, the company also plans on printing their own T-Shirts on company property. “It means we can be more topical with our T-Shirts and make a few then put them on the website and see if it sells. We are in the process of making it run on green energy as well,” said Hieatt. The company used to import organic t-shirts from Turkey before deciding to print their own.
Even though the Welsh company has always prided itself on being enviromentally conscious, now that they are backed by a larger company, being able to find even more ways to protect the environment is their main concern. “We want to look at zips now as that is another one of our bugbears. You make a really good quality cotton jacket that is guaranteed to last for 10 years and the zip can let you down. We are trying to find a good- quality zip with an ecological story,” said Hieatt.
