T-shirts in a Tube

Tuesday 08th of May 2007 04:26:00 AM

T-shirts in a TubeA new store, UNIQLO UT, opened recently in Tokyo, Japan, that sells a wide variety of T-Shirts in tubes. For many in Japan, shopping is a fun activity, so being trendy is important in order for consumers to notice and want to buy products offered. Situated in Tokyo Harajuku district, the store is very large and contains many different types of shirts.

The shirts are sold in machines that closely resemble vending machines. Consumers look at the pictures and decide which shirt they would like to purchase. They insert their money, choose a size, and their shirt is given to them. There are no salespeople, which many people find refreshing. There are however, plasma televisions, which keep people entertained as they shop.

The store is set up by category where shoppers can easily find what they are looking for. UNIGQLO UT sells lower end T-Shirts that many people wear because they are comfortable and inexpensive. Since the shirts do not cost much, many are less concerned if the fit is just right. Those who want to try on the T-Shirts before buying may have a difficult time in this store because there are no dressing rooms.

Even though the store is expected to be a success, may are apprehensive if the idea of selling T-Shirts in a tube would work in other parts of the world. Because Japan is crowded, selling items using a very small amount of space seems logical. In other parts of the world, the idea may not be a good one.
