For those in the UK retail and apparel business, traceability is an important factor especially if they are promoting the use of organic cottons and other environmentally friendly materials in their products. Historic Futures, which developed the myString database, has made improvements to the system after suggestions from users that will make finding products and measurements much easier.“We have made some important changes to how myString works. Since version 2.0 we have we have provided a mechanism to enable kg equivalence to be calculated for any product. This is to help convert products from whatever unit it is normally measured in, to a standardised value in order to provide mass balance information across processes.”
“Customers have told us that for some products mass isn‘t important, and that the kilogram equivalence functionality was getting in the way. For example, if you make T-Shirts, it doesn‘t matter how much each one weighs, you just need to know how many of them there are,” Historic Futures managing director Tim Wilson, said.
Wilson went on to say, “To make this easy, we have introduced a new ‘create product category wizard’ which will guide customers through a step-by-step process so that myString can work out how the new category should work.”
Being able to find information about materials, fibres, and clothing items will help manufacturers and chain supply operations coordinate with each other by being able to know when shipments are on their way and how much will be arriving. Tracking past orders is another function that will help chain managers increase or decrease orders from month to month based on the previous month’s order.
