For many bands, releasing their 10th album never happens mostly because of band break-ups, decreased popularity, or lack of material. But for UK’s Oysterband, getting back to their roots was the inspiration for their 10th album. Wearing T-Shirts on stage, the band is very similar to other talented musicians who keep on rocking. Learning new instruments, taking chances with lyrics, and having a good time are the reasons why this band thrives.“We've had our REM and our Pogues periods and there reaches a point where you have to go back to direct simplicity. It had to be acoustic and with a freshness, and it couldn't be what we had done before," said John Jones, the lead singer of Oysterband. Playing to a new generation of fans near London’s Hyde Park, the band, which came onto the music scene in 1981, is trying to recapture sounds from the past and concerns people had about the world.
While this is not always easy for many bands, those who are passionate about music and their songs will reach new audiences. By going back to folk roots, Oysterband, is doing what many musicians are doing, which is to create a new style from the old.
Any good band will go through phases in their musical career. Even though their onstage T-Shirts remain the same, many bands are able to attract fans from different genres because of their ability to adapt to the times. Returning to a simpler time, playing music acoustically seems to be the trend these days. Since Oysterband is already well-known, the transition shouldn’t be a difficult one.
