After a succession of hit albums, UK band James decided to take a break and stop performing. While many people called their 2001 break, a permanent break up, bassist Jim Glennie didn’t want it all to end. "I can't believe it. When it all ended, we went our separate ways. I had a real bee in my bonnet about James continuing; I was really attached to doing something as James,” said Glennie. But now the band is back together for a reunion tour and Glennie couldn’t be more proud.Even though they had been releasing popular albums since 1991, the band lost track of why they enjoyed playing together. It took Glennie a long time to figure out what he missed the most about his experiences with the band.
“As the first couple of years went by, I found it wasn't James that I was attached to; it wasn't travelling around, or the rock lifestyle, or the ego buzz of being on stage. Musically, I'd fallen in love with what I was creating with Larry, its simplicity. With James, we had to book a residential rehearsal room in the middle of nowhere, we had to drag all the crew there, hire a fleet of hire cars, there were people flying in. You couldn't spontaneously do anything. You couldn't just play for the love of it,” he said.
James is not only known for its music, they are also known for their T-Shirts. “At its height, we were selling 30,000 T-Shirts a month. We had a huge warehouse in Prestwich - it's probably true that we sold more T-Shirts than records at certain points,” said Glennie.
