Strangles, which is a disease that claims the lives of many show and race horses each year, is being fought through research and therapies, but more money is needed in order to find a cure. Horse and Hound will begin selling Polo Shirts in July in conjunction with clothing apparel company Puffa as a way to raise money and awareness of this disease. The shirts will be sold at the British Horse Society’s 60th birthday dinner, but those who want to preorder them can do so online."Horse & Hound is extremely pleased to play a role in this fund-raising initiative for the strangles campaign, a disease we would all like to see eliminated." £2 will be donated from each shirt sold. Polo Shirts will cost £30 apiece.
"When I heard about the campaign, I immediately wanted to do something to help eliminate such an awful disease. I know this issue will be close to the hearts of horse lovers everywhere and I hope they will want to show their support by participating in this campaign - £250,000 is an achievable amount to raise,” said Neil Farrar, managing director for Puffa. The shirts will be available in four colours, navy, pink, ice blue, and white.
The campaign, started by the Animal Heath Trust (AHT) and British Horse Society (BHS), hopes to be able to find a cure for Strangles so that other horses do not have to suffer from it. By gaining exposure from publications like Horse and Hound and clothing manufacturers like Puffa, more money will be raised as people buy the Polo Shirts.
