The clothing that is worn while participating in sporting activities can help or hinder in many cases. Traditionally, racers in the 5K and 10K runs that are held in the Lake in the Hills community of Arlington, Illinois, USA, have worn synthetic cotton T-Shirts. This year organisers gave the runners shirts that were made to absorb sweat and help runners feel more comfortable. “We decided that we wanted to give the runners nice shirts,” said the director of the races, Andrew Gemmell.About four hundred people showed up to run in the races, which helped to raise money for low-income families in the area. Wearing the long-sleeved and short-sleeved T-Shirts helped runners stay warm, but not too warm during the races. Children’s races were also held, which were up to a mile in length. “My son loves to do these races and I don’t want to discourage him,” said Hillel Morris, one of the participants, who drove over an hour to be there.
T-Shirts made from fibres that whisk away sweat from the body are being used in more sporting events. Sportswear companies like Nike have already introduced gear for professional athletes that can be worn underneath uniforms and other items. T-shirts that absorb sweat allow athletes to move quicker because there is little excess sweat to weigh them down.
While these fabrics are still being tested and used by a few sports teams, they should become a lot more popular in the years to come. Organic cotton is also an option for those who want to wear clothing that absorbs sweat. T-Shirts and other items made from organic cotton are available in many stores and retail outlets.
