After being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease in 1993, NHL player Mario Lemieux was at the top of his game. Since then he has created a charity that helps fund research for Hodgkin’s disease and other forms of cancer. While he is now cancer free, Lemieux spends much of his time trying to help others through fund raising and awareness campaigns.T-Shirts that have the logo ‘Giving Others A Chance To Win’ with a screen-print signature from Lemieux near the collar will be sold on the charities web site as well as in specific locations throughout Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Proceeds will go toward cancer research and neonatal care.
Using T-Shirts as a fund raising campaign is a great idea as they will not only raise a significant amount of money, those who buy them will be proud to wear them and spread the word about the foundation.
Over the years, the foundation has been able to give away a substantial amount of money to hospital research centres. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center received a US$5 million dollar donation from the foundation and most recently US$2 million dollars was given to Children’s Home of Pittsburgh, which provides children with cancer and their families a home-like atmosphere while children undergo treatment. The foundation also helps to the support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Western Pennsylvania.
In addition to helping people who have cancer, the foundation also supports the playroom project, started by Nathalie Lemieux. The project helps raise money for hospitals that are in need of play areas for children who visit or stay at the hospital.
