These days, celebrities from Madonna to lesser known musicians like Pete Doherty from the band, Babyshambles, have their own clothing lines. But this trend includes not only those fronting the band, but drummers and others who make up the band as well. Matt Helders, the drummer from Arctic Monkeys, will be introducing his clothing label, the result of collaboration with Supremebeing clothing, next month at stores like Selfridges. T-Shirts, jackets, and Sweatshirts are some of the clothing items in the line. While celebrities are not designers, some have more input than others. “I showed him a selection of fabrics, patterns and cuts, and he would say, 'What about this, with that print on it, in that colour, with that lining,' and I would mock it up on the computer. What he did is a little bit like remixing in a way,” said Joseph Lipscomb, designer of Supremebeing.
The collaboration began after Liscomb had heard from Helders dad, an employee of Supremebeing, that his son enjoyed clothing. The Artic Monkeys, who usually wear plain Polo Shirts, seemed an unlikely group to find fashion inspiration, but both Helders and Lipscomb worked well together.
For many designers, working with those who have a certain level of celebrity can help increase the popularity of their clothing. While most clothing is usually a limited run, it can be enough to propel a label into the public eye and give it staying power. Maybe this is why celebrity clothing is becoming the trend these days. Given the amount of competition that smaller labels are facing, being able to include a celebrity name on their label is one way to become noticed more often by the crowds.
