When a $1000 anonymous gift was left on the doorstep of the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Freehold, located in Freehold, New Jersey, USA, the intention was that the money be used to serve others and ‘pay it forward’. The money was turned over to the youth of the church, who are actively involved in community service. Their job was to decide the best way to use the money and use their time helping those in need. The group decided to use the money to help the poorest in their community be able to afford food through the month of March. As a token of thanks, one of the church members donated Sweatshirts the students could wear that had their church logo on them. The embroidery work was also donated. This act of support and kindness was a way of paying it forward to those who want to devote their lives to helping others. The youth group worked closely with another church in their area in order to help feed those who needed food.
“I am so glad to have the support of the youth from my church for this ministry. It is vital that they learn to put their faith into action and learn compassion for people less fortunate than them,” said Sandra Whitehill, coordinator for the church’s volunteer sanctuary program. The youth group worked with the Reformed Church, which is also located in Freehold.
The youth group will also be busy this summer as they plan on completing missionary work in nearby Pennsylvania. But for now, the group plans on completing other community service. Until spring arrives, they will be able to wear their Sweatshirts and be reminded of their hard work, dedication, and ability to help others.
