March 14 was Pi day, an unofficial day where people celebrate the mysteries and wonderment of the one of the most famous irrational numbers out there. Pi, which begins with the digits 3.14…. has been used in hundreds of mathematic equations, philosophical arguments, and in countless engineering projects. To celebrate this special day, people were able to purchase T-Shirts, books, and movies about the number and its origins. Those who celebrated the day were able to shop for T-Shirts and other items at small shops and online. Trying to recite the order of the numbers that make up Pi is one game that people like to play for this occasion. While the Guinness Book of World Records states that Chao Lu, a chemistry professor from China, was able to recite 67,890 digits that make up Pi, it is rumoured that Akira Haraguchi, from Japan, is able to recite 100,000. But since Haraguchi has never contacted anyone from Guinness, his achievement has never been recorded officially. Marc Umile, from the United States, holds the US record with 12, 887 numbers.
Buying T-Shirts, books, and movies will not make people want to learn the numbers of Pi, however. For most people, it is a fascinating number because it has been used in science, math, philosophy, mythology, and folk lore. The number is impressive because it goes on forever. Each year, people celebrate Pi day as a way to show their respect and as a way to find cool T-Shirts with the Pi symbol written on them. This is a fun holiday that will hopefully continue for a long, long time.
