Starting an online sweat shirt business, attending an art school, working as a hair stylist, and consulting on the side would be plenty for most people, but for eighteen year old Ali Madigan, this is only the beginning. Since last year, when she made her own sweat shirt out of scraps of fabric, she has launched her own site on MySpace.com where people can place orders for their own Sweatshirts. All hand sewn by Madigan, the shirts can be pricey, but they are worth it. “Every piece of clothing is made uniquely, handmade with heart,” said Madigan.“I started making clothes and adding on fabric when I was in the third grade. My grandmother used to make her own pillow cases and in her spare time she taught me how to sew. At that point I had already been really artistic, and I expressed that through drawing, paintings, clay sculptures, just everything,” said Madigan. It takes about six hours for Madigan to finish two Sweatshirts, which she is hoping to improve when she launches her new web site in the next few months and also wants to begin selling her shirts in stores.
Madigan also wants to branch out into other areas of clothing design as well. She already has ideas for dresses, t-shirts, and other clothing. “I design everything from hooded Sweatshirts, to dresses, which would fall into the category of formal wear, T-shirts, bags and anything that could be made out of fabric and some thread,” said Madigan.
Working hard to pursue her dreams is beginning to pay off. Since launching her MySpace page, she has received countless orders and the page has been viewed over 150,000 times. “My look is funky, hip-hop, couture and classic — all these mixed together,” said Madigan. Many people would agree.
