For four friends trying to make it in the clothing business, having day jobs has helped. But now, after investing $75,000 in start-up costs, their company, Sub Urban Riot, is selling their T-Shirts quickly, which has caused the friends to begin designing other clothing including women’s Sweatshirts, dresses, and expanding their line of men’s t-shirts.“Our focus has morphed into a couple of phrases. One is trouble makers, people who don't follow the rules. We create fashion in the sense that it bends the rules a little bit. A lot of our images are graphically aggressive. It's something we focused on as a start-up to do everything right here. We keep our inventory as low as possible. We could go overseas to save a couple of bucks, but you end up buying twice as many shirts as you need and we're happy to keep business here,” said one of the friends, Jason Reed.
“We started out aiming at the 18- to 35-year-old male and now we've added dresses and men's and women's hoodies (hooded Sweatshirts). We're in 50 boutiques nationwide and three-fourths of the market is women; it's a powerful market,” said Reed.
The friends are involved in designing the clothing, which is then produced about 30 miles from their home. Marketing has also helped the company grow in popularity. Their clothing has been featured in FX Network’s sitcom, ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’.
“It's a great relationship for us and we didn't have to do anything. We're able to use still shots from the show in our advertising,” said Reed.
Profits from selling their T-Shirts will be more than enough to cover the initial investment. This has made the friends very happy with the choices they have made.
