Patrons Buy T-shirts to Help Save Bookstore

Monday 05th of March 2007 03:07:53 PM

Patrons Buy T-shirts to Help Save BookstoreWhen Boston, Massachusetts, USA bookstore Tyler Stewart found out that he owed $15,000 in back taxes on his bookstore, Pandemonium, he posted a blog about how he came to owe that much money and told his customers and others that he was going to sell T-Shirts to help pay the bills. If Stewart could not raise the money soon, he would have owed even more money. But his customers and others heard his cries for help and bought enough t-shirts to pay back the debt.

Other local bookstores even tried to help by asking people to place orders for T-Shirts from Stewart’s shop. Advertising in newsletters and other media, Harvard Bookstore owner, Frank Kramer did his best to save the little bookstore. “We're an independent and believe we should be supporting all independent bookstores as much as we can without hurting our own business. I'm delighted he'll be able to pay those back taxes,” said Kramer.

Stewart had chosen to close his tiny shop in Harvard Square last year and find a larger space. But once he found his new space, it was riddled with construction problems and other issues which resulted in the delay of the opening of the new location. In the meantime, his many of his customers though he has shut the store down. By the time it had reopened, Stewart did not have to crowds he once had and was falling deeper into debt.

Even though his tax problems are not over, Stewart has begun to see familiar faces of customers who have found him again and who wanted to show their support by buying a t-shirt. “We did it. We sold over 1,000 Tees in two weeks. I'm completely grateful for the response,” said Stewart.
