Mounted police are not as common in many US cities as they once were. But for some counties around Detroit, Michigan, USA, mounted police are used to patrol small areas, participate in parades and other events, and as a way to show community spirit. Ron Berris, who owns a dental practice in Franklin, a community outside Detroit, also volunteers his time with his many horses as a member of the mounted police.Since volunteers pay for to transport their horses and pay for food and housing, Officer Jim Hirschfield, who runs the unit, who has a horse of his own that he uses when on patrol, has decided to sell T-Shirts, Sweatshirts, patches, and other items in order to raise money to help pay for the horses and new trailers. They expect to raise about $18,000 to help pay for new horse trailers.
The town of Franklin does not currently pay for any of the maintenance for the horses and does not help pay for transportation. In addition to helping to protect the citizens of Franklin, the horses are a tourist attraction. “The horses are great for public relations, especially with kids. We usually spend time up at the cider mill during the season. We do the Labour Day parade, the summer concerts on the green,” said Hirschfield.
The mounted police also visit other cities to show off their horses. “People love it. They just think it's cool. And besides, I love to ride,” said Berris. Educating children about how animals can help a community is very important.
Raising money through selling T-Shirts and other items will help pay for a larger trailer that will accommodate larger horses. Currently, the trailer they are using is too small.
