The small town of Mississauga, which is located outside of Toronto, Canada, wants to become more recognized as a tourist area. With over fifty hotels, many of the gift shops only carry souvenirs from Toronto. Polo Shirts, hats, key chains,T-Shirts and mugs all bear the name Toronto and not Mississauga. But the town it trying to change this by advertising in tourism magazines, building a web site, and trying to find manufacturers that will make items that bear the town’s name.
One of the more outspoken advocates of this tourism change is Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion. “Every hotel I go into in Mississauga, the only souvenirs I can buy are for Toronto,” said McCallion, who is urging everyone who works in the tourism industry to persuade vendors to manufacture items that tourists can buy in order to remember their trip to Mississauga.Gift shop owners couldn’t agree more with Mayor McCallion’s observations and need for change. “I would love to carry [Mississauga souvenirs]. But from where should I buy it?” said shop owner Fred Allana, who is convinced people would buy these items "because now, people have heard of Mississauga."
"We knew that Mississauga was not a top-of-mind leisure destination and we probably never will be. However, we know that Mississauga is an ideal location that makes a lot of sense for folks when they're coming into the GTA. We will find some way to address it, whether it be in the form of reviewing opportunities and partnerships with the city or with the private sector,” said Suzan Trabert McKay, CEO of Mississauga Tourism.
The small city that wants to be known for more than being Toronto’s neighbour is trying its best to become a tourist destination that people will want to buy Polo Shirts with the town’s name on them.
