Students of Sandy High School, located in Oregon, USA, who were upset about clothing restrictions placed by school administrators may be able to wear some of the banned clothing after all. The school board had originally banned all T-Shirts and other clothing that had numbers on them, but now it will be allowing this clothing to be worn with the exception of the numbers 13 and 18, which they consider to be gang affiliated numbers. All other clothing banned will continue to be banned until further notice. This includes hooded sweatshirts, hats, sunglasses, and any clothing that advertises New York or Los Angeles. “The numbers that we know of that are inappropriate; we’ll keep an eyeball out for those. As new things change and things become emphasized, we’ll keep communicating with the kids and parents with what we’re doing,” said Principal Jim Paxton.
Several students were involved in a protest last week, however, after it had been suggested that students wear name badges with bar codes on them to school. Students wore T-Shirts with bar codes on them during the protest. While none of the students will be in trouble for the protest, the barcode badge has been put on hold for the time being.
Another idea that is being put on hold is instituting school uniforms. While many people agree it is a good idea, the school district is involved in a school renovation project, which takes up a lot of their time. “I haven’t lost my courage. You can wrap your students in a brand-new high school, which helps them study, and you can wrap your students in uniforms, which does the same thing,” said school board member Dan Thompson.
For now, the clothing ban will continue and the uniform idea will be discussed. Also discussed is the idea of uniforms for elementary students also.
