When Jason Chappell started printing his family’s sporting goods store logo on T-Shirts, he had no idea that it would turn into a full-time career. Since he has started college, he has decided to create original t-shirt designs. He even has a name for his fledgling company, J-Cheezy. “I just made a couple shirts for myself and started wearing them around, and people around here were like, ‘Yo, that’s pretty cool. Can you get me some of those?’ It just kind of grew from there,” said Chappell.(c)Katazyna Lipinska, www.sxc.hu Since Chappell is still in college, he has put off plans to run his business full-time. Chappell, who plays basketball, said, “I would like to get a website started where I can actually sell them online as soon as I get done with the season. Just get a website up and see where it goes from there. Maybe if it starts getting a lot more popular, maybe just add a few more things here and there. I don’t have any long-term goals; I’m just going to have fun with it, because that’s really all it is right now.”
Even though Chappell comes up with his own designs, he has plenty of friends who like to offer their ideas as well. “A lot of times I will be just drawing in class in my notebook; … if I find one I like, I’ll try to fool around with it and see what I can do with it. It’s weird — you get the inspiration from the strangest places,” said Chappell.
Some of Chappell’s work has been sold at the family’s sporting goods store. He has his parents support and they plan on helping him any way they can. But until Chappell is finished with college, he will continue creating designs for his T-Shirts and see what happens next.
